Tafsir bil-Ma'thoor and Tafsir bil-Ra'i are two fundamental methodologies of understanding the Quran.Tafsir bil-Ma'thoor involves interpreting the Quran based on reports from the Quran itself, Hadith, and statements of the Sahabah (companions of the Prophet) and Tabi'in (followers of the companions). This methodology relies on narrations, caution, and the approach of the early generations, avoiding personal opinion. It is considered the foundation of Quranic interpretation, and without it, any Tafsir is considered incomplete. On the other hand, Tafsir bil-Ra'i is a method where the interpreter uses reasoning, intellectual effort, linguistic analysis, and modern scholarly principles to explain the Quran, highlighting its comprehensiveness and relevance to contemporary issues. This method allows for intellectual flexibility and responding to modern challenges but carries the risk of excessive interpretation or misunderstanding.A balanced approach is to base Tafsir on Tafsir bil-Ma'thoor while using Tafsir bil-Ra'i as a guiding tool, ensuring that reason is used appropriately. This balanced methodology is the true legacy of the Salaf and righteous scholars.
