A Comparative Analysis of the Social Teachings of Sūrah Al-Ḥujurāt (Verses 9–13) in the Light of Tafsīr Maʿārif al-Qurʾān and Tafsīr Tadabbur al-Qurʾān

A society in which individuals show consideration and respect for one another, transform differences into means of reconciliation rather than discord, and fully safeguard human dignity is the society that truly becomes a symbol of genuine social cohesion. The concluding verses of Sūrah Al-Ḥujurāt were revealed to reinforce these very social principles. These verses repeatedly emphasize maintaining peace and reconciliation among people, refraining from the inappropriate use of sarcasm and mockery, and avoiding negative behaviors. The purpose of these divine guidelines is not merely to purify the hearts and promote gentleness in speech, but also to protect interpersonal relationships from discord and corruption. In particular, Verse 13 makes it clear that the true criterion of superiority among human beings is neither language nor noble lineage, but solely Taqwa (God-consciousness). Furthermore, the concluding verses of the Surah beautifully highlight the distinction between merely claiming to have faith and demonstrating faith through practical conduct. This article presents a comparative analysis of the concluding verses of Surah Al-Hujurat in the light of Tafsīr Maʿārif al-Qurʾān and Tafsīr Tadabbur al-Qurʾān.
