Imam Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥusayn ibn Masʿūd al-Baghawī (d. 516 AH) was one of the prominent scholars of the fifth and sixth centuries AH and made significant contributions to Qur’anic exegesis, Ḥadīth, jurisprudence, and Prophetic biography. Although he is widely recognized for his major works such as Maʿālim al-Tanzīl, Sharḥ al-Sunnah, and Maṣābīḥ al-Sunnah, his contribution to the literature of Prophetic Shamā’il has received comparatively less scholarly attention. His work al-Anwār fī Shamā’il al-Nabī al-Mukhtār is an important source for understanding the physical characteristics, noble qualities, habits, manners, daily practices, and social dealings of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. This study examines the life and scholarly contributions of Imam al-Baghawī, with particular emphasis on his methodology in al-Anwār fī Shamā’il al-Nabī al-Mukhtār. It also discusses the linguistic and terminological meanings of Shamā’il and clarifies its relationship with the broader discipline of Prophetic biography. The study analyzes the arrangement of the work, its use of Prophetic traditions, its treatment of the Prophet’s ﷺ physical and moral characteristics, and its emphasis on authentic and reliable narrations. The research demonstrates that al-Baghawī adopted a concise, systematic, and tradition-based approach, presenting the Prophetic Shamā’il primarily through transmitted reports while avoiding unnecessary speculation and lengthy discussions. His methodology reflects his broader commitment to Ḥadīth scholarship and the understanding of Prophetic guidance through reliable sources. The study concludes that al-Anwār fī Shamā’il al-Nabī al-Mukhtār represents a valuable contribution to the literature of Prophetic Shamā’il. It not only preserves important narrations concerning the personality and conduct of the Prophet ﷺ but also provides a means of developing love for the Prophet ﷺ, moral refinement, and adherence to the Prophetic Sunnah. The study therefore highlights the significance of al-Baghawī’s contribution to the scholarly tradition of Shamā’il and its continuing relevance for contemporary Islamic studies.
