Abstract

This paper explores the intersection of Islamic philanthropy and human rights in Indonesia, challenging the prevailing notion that Islamic doctrine inherently contradicts human rights principles, especially in areas such as gender relations. Focusing on the practices of zakat and waqf, the essay argues that these Islamic philanthropic mechanisms have played a crucial role in aiding individuals irrespective of their religious or ethnic affiliations. Contrary to existing studies, this research contends that zakat funds, when employed for poverty alleviation, have significantly contributed to enhancing the social, economic, health, and educational conditions of the underprivileged. Through an in-depth examination of zakat agencies, it becomes apparent that these funds have been instrumental in bringing about positive changes in various sectors. The study challenges the oversimplification of portraying Islam as incompatible with human rights. It emphasizes the need for a nuanced understanding, suggesting that the textual dimension of Islamic teachings requires reinterpretation. Such reinterpretation should align with the broader objectives of Sharia (maqasid al-sharia) and universal principles of humanity. By adapting Islamic principles to contemporary contexts, this research argues that a more harmonious relationship between Islamic philanthropy and human rights can be established. In conclusion, the paper advocates for a shift away from rigid interpretations and encourages a more contextual and adaptive approach to Islamic teachings. It asserts that aligning Islamic philanthropy with human rights is not only plausible but can lead to positive outcomes for diverse communities in Indonesia.
