The Methodology and Style of Da‘wah and Preaching in Surah Ya-Sin, Verses 20–32: A Comparative Study in the Light of Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Ma‘arif al-Qur’an

Abstract

Islam is a universal and comprehensive way of life whose message is intended for all of humanity. This true religion originated in the land of Arabia, and Allah Almighty has preserved it until the Day of Judgment. Various means, including preaching, religious propagation, education, and teaching, have played a significant role in the spread of Islam throughout the world; however, Da‘wah and Tabligh (invitation and propagation) hold a fundamental position in this regard. The Holy Qur’an, in numerous places, encourages believers to enjoin righteousness, call people toward the truth, and convey the message of religion to others. The primary objective of Da‘wah and Tabligh is to strengthen a person’s relationship with Allah Almighty, enable him to distinguish between truth and falsehood, and provide guidance for living according to Islamic teachings. The Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) were also sent for the fulfillment of this great responsibility. The Holy Qur’an presents various methods and approaches of Da‘wah and Tabligh, among which verses 20–32 of Surah Yasin hold particular significance. These verses highlight several important aspects of the methodology of Da‘wah, including the sincere concern of a preacher for his people, wisdom in preaching, calling toward the oneness of Allah, encouraging adherence to the truth, and reminding people of their accountability in the Hereafter. The present study comparatively examines the methodology and approaches of Da‘wah and Tabligh presented in the aforementioned verses of Surah Yasin in the light of Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Tafsir Ma‘ariful Qur’an.
